Image: Natalie Krahn, assistant professor in biochemistry and molecular biology, had her original artwork featured on the cover of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS). This artwork is representative of the Krahn lab’s recent publication where they made a single cysteine to selenocysteine substitution in an E. coli hydrogenase. The change in chemical properties of selenocysteine increased the hydrogen production of the hydrogenase and addressed the role of concerted proton-couple electron transfer in electrocatalytic reversibility.
