Three awards were recently given to people and programs at or affiliated with the University of Georgia, one of whom represents the university's biochemistry and molecular biology department.

Benjamin Boward, a Ph.D. candidate in BMB, accepted the Emerging Leader of the Year Award, which OnlineAthens says is presented to "young individuals who have made a significant impact on the life sciences industry through their studies or employment.

"Boward studies stem cell biology, specifically the genetic regulation of embryonic kidney development, with Stephen Dalton, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar of Molecular Biology and director of UGA's Center for Molecular Medicine."

Other awards presented included the Community Award, presented to the International Biomedical Regulatory Sciences Program at the university's College of Pharmacy, and the Deal of the Year Award for economic development for investments in Georgia facilities, presented to Boehringer Ingelheim, a longtime university partner.

Georgia Bio, the association for Georgia's life sciences industry, held its annual awards dinner Friday in Atlanta, during which the awards were presented.
