Image: A high school student working with the department of biochemistry and molecular biology has won the northeast region of Georgia's science fair. Celina Zhao, a junior at North Oconee High School, placed first in the regional science fair with her project, "Computational Analysis of Metabolic Reprogramming Across 14 Types of Cancer." Zhao's project is to "analyze differential expressions of acid-producing vs. acid-consuming metabolisms across different stages of different cancer types based on gene-expression data in the TCGA database," according to Dr. Ying Xu of the biochemistry and molecular biology department. Along with Xu, Zhao worked on her project with Ming-Xin Tao, a visiting graduate student from Jilin University in China. Zhao and four other students from the region will continue on to the state science fair competition March 28-30.
