(), e51840, doi:10.3791/51840 (2014) David Reynolds Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Departmental poster award, 2014 Received a $52,000 pre-doctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association to explore epigenetic regulation of gene expression in the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. This protozoan causes Chagas disease, which is a major cause of cardiac disease in South and Central America. David will study the role of a DNA base found within the parasite known as base J. Previous studies indicate that disruption of base J synthesis leads to changes in gene expression and renders T. cruzi defective in host cell invasion and egress. Work conducted under this grant will continue their investigation into what may be an important therapeutic target against Chagas disease.
