Image: Designed exclusively for first-year students majoring in biology, biochemistry, cellular biology, genetics, microbiology, plant biology, or ocean science, Connect Abroad-Immerse: A World of Health: Marine Environments & Global Medicine offers a transformative spring-break experience in Belize during March 2026. This newly launched program fulfills one-credit of experiential learning and immerses students in the vibrant world of marine medicine and biotechnology. Participants will snorkel coral reefs and study reef biodiversity firsthand; tour university labs and engage with local researchers; learn from experts in traditional healing and global health; collaborate on a marine-inspired health innovation project; and visit cultural and scientific research sites across Belize. Why Belize? The name Belize evokes images of lush rainforests, turquoise waters, and rich cultural heritage—but it’s also a rising hub for biological and health sciences. Nestled between the Caribbean Sea and Central America’s jungles, Belize boasts extraordinary biodiversity, including coral reefs and mangroves; tropical forests and savannas; as well as protected areas including the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. This ecological richness makes Belize a living laboratory for studying biology, ecology, and environmental health. In Belize, science meets culture. Belize’s commitment to conservation and sustainable development has attracted scientists and students eager to explore the links between human health and the natural world. The country’s expanding public health infrastructure and medical education initiatives—often in collaboration with international universities—support research in infectious and vector-borne diseases; community health and rural medicine; as well as climate change and biodiversity loss. Ecotourism and health-focused travel also play a growing role in Belize’s economy, drawing visitors interested in wellness, nature-based therapies, and medical volunteering. Traditional knowledge from Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean communities continues to inform biological and health sciences, offering valuable insights into plant-based medicine and holistic healing practices. As part of this immersive learning experience, students will explore Belize’s unique position at the crossroads of biodiversity and human health. From coral reef ecology to rural health initiatives, this program offers a dynamic environment for understanding how science, culture, and nature converge to shape well-being in the 21st century. This new program is led by Abigail Johnson, Academic Professional Associate in the Division of Biological Sciences and introductory biology professor who is passionate about making science feel relevant, exciting, and deeply connected to the real world. Johnson earned her Ph.D. in Ocean Science and Engineering studying deep subsurface microbes—tiny organisms thriving in extreme environments beneath the seafloor. Her expertise spans marine science, environmental health, and science communication, making her an ideal guide for this immersive experience. Johnson notes, “I look forward to exploring Belize with students and ‘diving’ into how the ocean inspires medicine, technology, and bold new ideas.” This unique opportunity fulfills experiential learning credit and is designed to build a strong scientific foundation, provide real-world insights, foster community and confidence, and spark a global perspective early in college journey. Space is limited with a September 20 deadline for application.
